Clara Schumann and others: Daring to compose
7pm | Free
Camille Villanove, musicologist and music mediatore
The influence of both Clara Wieck-Schumann and Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn on the musical compositions of their husband and brother, respectively, is undeniable. How is it possible that the talent and musical careers of these two first-class composers and performers just faded away? At the turn of the twentieth century, Ethel Smyth, a composer and suffragette, came to embody feminist engagement and built international notoriety. By listening to the compositions of these women, and reading their correspondence, we will discover the artistic paths of these creative spirits, and help them to emerge from obscurity.
