The arrival of Mathieu Copeland in Lorraine responds to a double invitation: FRAC Lorraine’s to a writers’ residence and the invitation by centre d’art contemporain—la synagogue de Delme to curate a city-wide
exhibition which will be presented in Delme over the course of a year, from 11 June to 19 September 2010.
A graduate of Goldsmith College in London (2003), Mathieu Copeland has been developing a practice seeking to subvert the traditional role of exhibitions and to renew our perceptions. As an independent curator, he organized, between 2004 and 2006, the following exhibitions: Expart-Art Center/EAC, Soundtrack for
an Exhibition at the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, and launched the itinerant Spoken
Exhibition. In 2008, he put together A Choreographed Exhibition at the Kunsthalle in St Gall, Switzerland, and at the Ferme du Buisson in Noisiel, France. In 2009, he curated the exhibition VOIDS, A Retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and at the Kunsthalle in Bern. He is also a co-editor of the bilingual catalogue Vides/Voids. Still in 2009, he was the curator of a retrospective devoted to Alan Vega, infinité mercy at the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lyon.He also published Perfect Magazine (2003) —a magazine printed in white on white, and directed the release of a collection of artists’ films on DVD.
Mathieu Copeland was born in 1977 in France. He lives and works in London.
