Taking George Orwell\u2019s dystopian novel 1984<\/em> as its point of reference, the project is the culmination of an investigation meticulously led by the artist. Accompanied by a detective, Paul Heintz, published a small ad in the English newspaper The Sun<\/em> to find homonyms of the hero of the book, Winston Smith. The artist received responses from forty men, of which six accepted to meet him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition introduces the research material of the operation, revealing the other side of the set. On a series of mural panels we find, in an index-like approach, a collection of notes, plans, scouting maps, and investigation tools, condensing the working process. Numerous copies of the novel are also shown, redacted by five of the tracked-down Winston Smiths, composing the images of a fantastical storyboard.

Finally, a film entitled Character<\/em>, was produced around the orchestrated meetings of these homonymes, who share only the name of a fictional character and a story.

Dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 des Beaux-Arts de Nancy et des Arts D\u00e9coratifs de Paris, Paul Heintz, invit\u00e9 par Fanny Gonella comme septi\u00e8me occurrence de Degr\u00e9s Est, pr\u00e9sente un projet dont la forme est le r\u00e9cit d\u2019investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prenant pour point d\u2019appui le roman dystopique 1984<\/em> de George Orwell, le projet r\u00e9sulte d\u2019un travail d\u2019enqu\u00eate minutieusement men\u00e9 par l\u2019artiste. Accompagn\u00e9 d\u2019un d\u00e9tective, Paul Heintz publie une petite annonce dans le quotidien anglais The Sun<\/em> pour trouver des homonymes du h\u00e9ros du livre, Winston Smith. L\u2019artiste re\u00e7oit r\u00e9ponse de quarante hommes, six acceptent de le rencontrer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019exposition introduit le mat\u00e9riel de recherche de l\u2019op\u00e9ration, faisant appara\u00eetre l\u2019envers du d\u00e9cor. Sur une s\u00e9rie de panneaux muraux figurent ainsi, de mani\u00e8re indicielle, un ensemble de notes, plans, cartes de rep\u00e9rages et outils d\u2018enqu\u00eate, condensant le processus de travail. Sont expos\u00e9s aussi plusieurs exemplaires du roman, caviard\u00e9s par cinq des Winston Smith rencontr\u00e9s, \u00e9crivant les images d\u2019un storyboard fantasm\u00e9.

Enfin un film, Character<\/em>, a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de la rencontre orchestr\u00e9e de ces homonymes, qui ne partagent qu\u2019un nom de personnage fictif et un r\u00e9cit.
En d\u00e9construisant par la fiction le travail d\u2019exploration, Paul Heintz cr\u00e9e un nouveau dispositif de la confidence. \u00c0 travers la forme de l\u2019enqu\u00eate se met en place une sociographie hasardeuse, un espace ouvert au bruit du monde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le travail de Paul Heintz a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 notamment \u00e0 la Fondation Ricard pour le cycle \u00ab Partitions \u00bb, au FID Marseille (2018) ; au Salon de Montrouge (2015), \u00e0 la Nuit Blanche de Paris (2014) etc. Il est laur\u00e9at du prix R\u00e9v\u00e9lation \u00c9merige en 2019.
