\u25cf Thomas Schmahl (born 1994 in Annecy, lives and works in Reims) graduated from the ESAD of Reims. Proposed by the director of the Frac Champagne Ardenne for the Degrees East series, Thomas Schmahl\u2019s work is devoted to showing the anecdotal, the lacking, the unstable. The artist devises situations and installations in which the story and the protagonists often find themselves in an elsewhere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Conceived for Degrees East, L\u2019aire mirabelle<\/em> takes the form of a system of use that reflects the reality of a highway rest-stop\u2019s bathrooms. The structure, fragile but viable, like an architecture within architecture, is that of an impersonal place responding to the need to stop. Inviting the visitor to enter into the structure, the artist stages an action which is not strictly situated. Instead, it could unfold either here or elsewhere, and asks us what happens when we are forced to slow down. Akin to a theatre set or a \u201csketch of the space\u201d in 3D, the installation also contains sculptures representing automobile motor-oil gauges, instruments for measuring time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the occasion, Thomas Schmahl also produced a limited edition vinyl record, The White Stripes<\/em>. These airs of the highway bring together stretched echoing landscapes and pop songs, reflected in these spaces of uniform appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its rough transcription of cramped space opposite the immensity of the highway, L\u2019aire Mirabelle<\/em> offers the possible experience of a place within a place, playing between inside and outside, in the path of a permanent draft of air.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false,"raw":"\n

\u25cf La proposition de Thomas Schmahl enrichit la programmation de l\u2019espace prospectif Degr\u00e9s Est, centr\u00e9 sur les artistes li\u00e9s au territoire du Grand Est. Activ\u00e9 par des propositions des trois FRAC du Grand Est, il introduit \u00e0 la diversit\u00e9 des pratiques artistiques actuelles, et souligne l\u2019engagement du Frac \u00e0 faire appara\u00eetre la pluralit\u00e9 au sein de la cr\u00e9ation contemporaine. Thomas Schmahl, sur une invitation de Marie Griffay, directrice du Frac Champagne-Ardenne, pr\u00e9sente le cinqui\u00e8me projet de ce dispositif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Schmahl (n\u00e9 en 1994 \u00e0 Annecy, vit et travaille \u00e0 Reims) est dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 de l\u2019ESAD de Reims. Con\u00e7ue pour Degr\u00e9s Est, L\u2019aire mirabelle<\/em> prend la forme d\u2019un dispositif d\u2019usage refl\u00e9tant la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 des sanitaires d\u2019une aire d\u2019autoroute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

La structure, fragile mais praticable, comme une architecture dans l\u2019architecture, est celle d\u2019un lieu impersonnel r\u00e9pondant \u00e0 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de l\u2019arr\u00eat. En invitant le visiteur \u00e0 entrer, l\u2019artiste met une sc\u00e8ne une action qui n\u2019a pas lieu mais pourrait se d\u00e9rouler, ailleurs ou ici-m\u00eame, et interroge ce qui se passe lorsque nous sommes contraints de ralentir. Proche d\u2019un d\u00e9cor de th\u00e9\u00e2tre ou \u00ab croquis d\u2019espace \u00bb en 3D, l\u2019installation est aussi support de sculptures repr\u00e9sentant des jauges \u00e0 huile de moteurs d\u2019automobile, instruments de mesure du temps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Schmahl pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement \u00e0 cette occasion un vinyle r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en \u00e9dition limit\u00e9e, Les bandes blanches (The White Stripes)<\/em>. Ces airs d\u2019autoroute compos\u00e9s par l\u2019artiste associent paysages sonores \u00e9tir\u00e9s et chanson populaire, \u00e0 l\u2019image de ces lieux en apparence standardis\u00e9s.
