\u25cf Unfolding as a composition, this exhibition features recent works by the Austrian artist Martin Beck who, at 49 Nord 6 Est\u2013FRAC Lorraine, presents his first major show in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Works on paper, photographs, sculptures, and videos\u2026 the artist chooses his medium depending on the subject matter addressed. Flowers<\/em>, for example, consists of sets of photographs that document the arrangement of a so-called Dutch flower bouquet. The images reveal both the methodical work of a florist and the fragility of the material she handles. Gestures and forms are gathered in altogether 36 different constellations that do not follow a sequential order.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Temporality is an essential component of Beck\u2019s work (born in 1963, lives in New York and Vienna, where he teaches). The research supporting the making of his works often spreads over several years before it culminates in a physical manifestation\u2014the first element of Last Night<\/em> took four years to develop\u2014or is a part of continuous long-term effort\u2014in recent years Beck produced one US letter-size document a day for certain durations, completing each year a new stage of working forwards, a diary-type art work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this exhibition, the geological time of conglomerates\u2014sedimentary, instable rocks made up of various clasts that have remained separated despite the passage of millennia\u2014runs alongside regular time, such as the artist\u2019s everyday work, or ephemeral time, such as the music played at the last seminal Loft party at 99 Prince Street in New York in 1984, which brought together diverse communities, revisited in a film that follows its total thirteen-and-half hour duration. Dans un second temps<\/em> brings together, in the space of the exhibition, constellations of objects created as artworks or by natural forces and informed by reflections on communities, forces of labor, or social dynamics. The artists extracts forms from histories and narratives related to countercultures\u2014shaped by gatherings, of people, natural elements, or objects\u2014to reassess them in light of the present. La temporalit\u00e9 est une composante essentielle du travail de Martin Beck (n\u00e9 en 1963, vit et travaille entre New York et Vienne o\u00f9 il enseigne). Il d\u00e9veloppe parfois ses recherches sur plusieurs ann\u00e9es pour aboutir \u00e0 une \u0153uvre \u2014 4 ans pour que les premiers \u00e9l\u00e9ments du projet Last Night<\/em> se mat\u00e9rialisent \u2014 ou encore s\u2019impose un rythme de travail r\u00e9gulier \u00e0 long terme \u2014 depuis 2016, sur des p\u00e9riodes donn\u00e9es, il produit un feuillet de format \u00abUS letter \u00bb par jour, donnant naissance chaque ann\u00e9e \u00e0 une nouvelle \u00e9tape de working forwards, \u0153uvre proche d\u2019un journal de bord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans cette exposition, le temps g\u00e9ologique des conglom\u00e9rats \u2014 roches s\u00e9dimentaires instables dont les \u00e9l\u00e9ments ne se sont jamais m\u00e9lang\u00e9s au cours des mill\u00e9naires \u2014 c\u00f4toie celui, r\u00e9gulier, du travail quotidien de l\u2019artiste ou encore celui, \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re, de l\u2019ultime f\u00eate ayant eu lieu au Loft \u00e0 New York en 1984. La musique jou\u00e9e lors de la derni\u00e8re de ces soir\u00e9es, rassemblant des communaut\u00e9s diverses et dont l\u2019influence sera fondamentale, est restitu\u00e9e dans l\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 de sa dur\u00e9e lors d\u2019un film de plus de 13 heures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans un second temps<\/em> rassemble dans l\u2019espace d\u2019exposition une s\u00e9lection d\u2019\u0153uvres de Martin Beck qui s\u2019inspirent des dynamiques sociales, des processus de travail et des r\u00e9cits li\u00e9s \u00e0 la contre-culture, tout en faisant r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 leur impact historique. \u25cf Unfolding as a composition, this exhibition features recent works by the Austrian artist Martin Beck who, at 49 Nord 6 Est\u2013FRAC Lorraine, presents his first major show in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Works on paper, photographs, sculptures, and videos\u2026 the artist chooses his medium depending on the subject matter addressed. Flowers<\/em>, for example, consists of sets of photographs that document the arrangement of a so-called Dutch flower bouquet. The images reveal both the methodical work of a florist and the fragility of the material she handles. Gestures and forms are gathered in altogether 36 different constellations that do not follow a sequential order.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Temporality is an essential component of Beck\u2019s work (born in 1963, lives in New York and Vienna, where he teaches). The research supporting the making of his works often spreads over several years before it culminates in a physical manifestation\u2014the first element of Last Night<\/em> took four years to develop\u2014or is a part of continuous long-term effort\u2014in recent years Beck produced one US letter-size document a day for certain durations, completing each year a new stage of working forwards, a diary-type art work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this exhibition, the geological time of conglomerates\u2014sedimentary, instable rocks made up of various clasts that have remained separated despite the passage of millennia\u2014runs alongside regular time, such as the artist\u2019s everyday work, or ephemeral time, such as the music played at the last seminal Loft party at 99 Prince Street in New York in 1984, which brought together diverse communities, revisited in a film that follows its total thirteen-and-half hour duration. Dans un second temps<\/em> brings together, in the space of the exhibition, constellations of objects created as artworks or by natural forces and informed by reflections on communities, forces of labor, or social dynamics. The artists extracts forms from histories and narratives related to countercultures\u2014shaped by gatherings, of people, natural elements, or objects\u2014to reassess them in light of the present.
