\u25cf  Saba Niknam<\/a> (*1988, Tehran, Iran, based in Strasbourg) is a graduate of the Haute \u00c9cole des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) in Strasbourg. She has been invited to the Degr\u00e9s Est space at the suggestion of Felizitas Diering, director of Frac Alsace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Degr\u00e9s Est is dedicated to artists from the Grand Est region. It features rotating proposals from the three FRACs in this region<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saba Niknam belongs to a generation “born after the <\/a>[1979] Iranian revolution”. While she has lived in Strasbourg for 17 years, her practice remains informed by her diasporic trajectory. In the manner of an ethnologist, she draws on traditions \u2014 most of which are still alive today in spite of the Islamic Republic\u2019s chokehold \u2014 to rewrite the stories of women, many of them warriors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Frac Lorraine, she is presenting a series of women’s headdresses created during the pandemic inspired by her interpretation of archival images. Blurring the boundaries between art and craft, she re-creates these headdresses using her own embroidery, fabrics gleaned from antique shops, or her collection of old clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I started studying Iranian headdresses and then moved on to other areas. The more I immersed myself in the cultures of the headdresses I was studying, the more I discovered the hidden symbolism contained within them and their embroidery. That\u2019s how I understood that I wanted to preserve my own cultural heritage by making them anew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this series, the artist weaves together traditions from the Middle East, Central Asia and the Far East, highlighting the links between her cultural heritage and other parts of the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019artiste est invit\u00e9e \u00e0 occuper l\u2019espace Degr\u00e9s Est sur une proposition de Felizitas Diering, directrice du Frac Alsace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saba Niknam fait partie de la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration \u00ab n\u00e9e apr\u00e8s la r\u00e9volution iranienne\u00bb de 1979. Install\u00e9e \u00e0 Strasbourg depuis 17 ans, sa pratique est nourrie par son histoire diasporique. \u00c0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019une ethnologue, elle mobilise des traditions pour la plupart encore vivantes, \u00e9touff\u00e9es par la R\u00e9publique Islamique d\u2019Iran, pour r\u00e9\u00e9crire des histoires de femmes, souvent guerri\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elle pr\u00e9sente au Frac Lorraine une s\u00e9rie de coiffes de combattantes, cr\u00e9\u00e9es pendant la pand\u00e9mie \u00e0 partir d\u2019images d\u2019archives qu\u2019elle interpr\u00e8te. Elle refabrique ces couvre-cheffes <\/em>avec des broderies qu\u2019elle r\u00e9alise, des tissus qu\u2019elle chine ou issus de sa collection de v\u00eatements anciens, brouillant les fronti\u00e8res entre art et artisanat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"J\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9tudier les coiffes d\u2019Iran pour m\u2019int\u00e9resser ensuite \u00e0 d\u2019autres zones g\u00e9ographiques. Plus je m\u2019immergeais dans les cultures des coiffes que j\u2019\u00e9tudiais, plus je d\u00e9couvrais le symbolisme cach\u00e9 derri\u00e8re celles-ci et leurs broderies. J\u2019ai ainsi r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que je voulais pr\u00e9server mon propre patrimoine culturel en les refabriquant.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans cette s\u00e9rie, l\u2019artiste tisse des liens entre les traditions du Moyen-Orient, d\u2019Asie centrale et d\u2019Extr\u00eame-Orient et rend visible des liens entre son h\u00e9ritage culturel et diverses parties du monde.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
